In the now

I have been busy! I'm now two weeks into school and I'm loving it. I recently switched my major to the Visual Arts. Although the program is fun and interesting, I feel like I'm taking a huge step backwards while fulfilling the first year foundation course requirements. It will be much nicer once I can take upper level courses and, y'know, graduate.

Also on the UVic front, The Martlet has been keeping me busy with illustrations and various tasks. I'm really enjoying my time there, it's a very supportive environment for students getting into the field. And they give me da moneys.

In other news, I have been working closely with Denver on some music for an upcoming project, which is turning out awesomely fantastical! Expect great things in the near future.

More updates!

Also, took part in a redesign of the Martlet this month. I like how it looks so far. I think we'll be tweaking it over September and seeing how we can perfect it. Personally I am partial to a large photo/graphic cover (but I guess this has the potential for both the newspaper or magazine style). Hopefully I don't receive any flak for replacing the bird that people have grown to know and love!

In other news, Krazy is coming up! Well, Comix & Stories to be more accurate. August 24th at the Vancouver Art Gallery will be a day of local comix and 'zines! Go check out Checkerpop at our table (and screenings at 1:00 ish). See you there, cowboy.

I need to blog more, damnit!

Stuffz

Here's just a sample of line art on one of the pages from the 3rd volume of Checkerpop! Click to enlarge!

Had a lot of fun up late drawing this one. Denver and I basically finished it but our printer blew up! We are now considering a few different options for printing. I'll get back to you when we know how we'll be printing.

In other news, Van comicon was a good experience! Our comics sold out save a few copies! Met some interesting artists and had a radical time!

Some interesting characters there for sure! The pic above is from a cool dude/game designer (Ian Christy). More of his photos of the con here.

I have a million other things to say. We are chillin' at Nigel's listening to him mix dope beats and I'm going to pass out now!

Bye friends!

Music for the Future

Dude! A strange and musical day today. I popped over to Zola's to pick up her keytar. Holy shit. I always thought I wanted a keytar. And I was always like, "keytars are really cool, I totally want one." Man, I had no idea. It is actually the best intstrument on the planet. I think I may have found my instrument of choice. Now I'm sure some of you are thinking "isn't it just a keyboard, that you wear, sorta?" Well the answer is no! Actually, yes - kind of. Whatever it, doesn't matter. I really like it.

But wait, that's not all! There's more! Eric stopped by today to jam and help me fix my guitar. For some unkown reason, he has these weird "electronic drumsticks." They look like oversized motor-powered toothbrushes, or some strange testing unit found in a doctor's office (see below). You can make a beat by simply swinging them in the air. I guess they can serve as a good practice tool for aspiring drummers? Anyways, they are pretty crappy but I basically played with them for an hour straight and enjoyed myself. Then it hit me: keytar + weird toothbrush things = awesome. Despite the lack of quality, they produce this cheeseball synthy sound that I just had to record.

So that's that. Check the song I made with these cracked out tools: SONG!

The con went well. Sold a bunch of comics. Had so much fun. Spent way too much money on the whole ordeal.

Wanna thank everyone who contributed to the comic book as well as everyone who bought a copy or said nice things about it!! :)

So much fun!

Everybody's askin'

Where'd it go, man?

In other news, I recently got a job at the Martlet as production designer. It was unexpected as I applied quite a while ago. But hey, this is great. It's a cool place to be. I really like it and I'm learning quite a bit. It's pretty hectic on production day; it's really cool to be behind the scenes as opposed to being loosely involved as a volunteer. The current staff members are really nice   .....aaannddd being paid to make graphics and draw cartoons? Sounds good to me.

And playing smash bros brawl instead of doing homework - best feeling there is.

Vagina! (scroll down for details)

Some spot illustrations for the Martlet feature this week. We will see what they use! It's a good read, pick up a copy tomorrow! (I will link to the story when it's online)

The fabled "peach fish." Slang for female genitalia which supposedly spawned from an accurate description of the taste: "like peach, but fishy."

Self explanatory. I felt gross doing this one.

Get it?!

Ha.

Things.

This album is up for download here. Go listen to it right now. Uematsu will blow your mind (once again). Even that album art, damn yeah. I have been listening to this one religiously for the past few days. My taste in music lately has been very odd. I've been rotating between this, Death from Above 1979, and some CSS. The ipod shuffle kind of forces me to mix things up.

Speaking of music, I am in the Black Stilt doing some research before work; they are playing The Slackers and it's making me happy!

Editorial cartoon from last week's Martlet.

Read the article here.

Fun Times.

Recently I decided to polish up the website (and by polish I mean bring it to a functional state...barely). I think I will be using this page as my (sketch) blog and spot to archive some cartoons. Well, this and deviantart.

That aside, NEWS!

We are going to the Calgary Comic Expo April 26-27!!! And by "we," I mean the "team." We went last year and it was amazing. They had some big names on the guest list and it kinda rocked the universe. This time, however, the importance of the people attending will blow your mind. Like, holy shit. I can't believe it. This list will make you shit your pants.

Go here for all the juicy details:

We have a table there and will be selling shit. I will update later with details and shiz.
